The Incidence and Significance of Hyperbilirubinemia and Alkaline Phosphatase Level in Acute Cholecystis

Abstract
The incidence and significance of hyperbilirubinemia and alkaline phophatase level were examined in 126 consecutive patients who was admitted in this hospital with signs and symptoms of acute cholecystitis and underwent laparatomy.
1. The highest incidence of the acute cholecystitis in this series was in the 3rd decades of life. 2. The sex distribution assumed a ratio of 1 male to 1.7 female.
3. Forty-one cases (32.5%) were found to have abnormally elevated preoprative serum bilirubin level.
4. Out of 41 cases, of acute cholecystitis with¢¥ preoperative hyperbilirubinemia, 23 cases (56%) had stones in the common bile duct.
5. Alkaline phosphatase was significantly, elevated in the cases with hyperbilirubinemia show-ing more than 1.4 mg% of, serum bilirubin.
The elevation of the alkaline phosphatasee was especially remarkable in the patient with com-mon bile duct stones.
6. Hyperbilirubinemia also significantly increased in patient with acute cholecystitis without common bile duct stone although it occurs frequently in the patients with acute cholecystitis associated with common bile duct stones.
